Solution usually boils down to installing the correct drivers for the
sound card/chip. Frequently caused by allowing "default" installs, or
"updating" your hardware from the Microsoft website to some generic
driver which is not correct. get any drivers for your system from the
manufacturer of the soundcard, motherboard manufacturer, or laptop
manufacturer, as appropriate.
