VHS to Laptop

Hi, I could do with some 'real' advice. I want to connect my laptop to my VHS recorder to download tape. I have the software but not sure what cables I need. Tried a couple of large retailers but none were helpful. Can someone advise?

To record your VHS into digital, you need a TV card, that has a video input connector.

If you already have one, which type/manufacturer is it? As you are using a laptop it is unlikely to have a TV card built in unless it is a top-range model.
 
Thanks. Can I ask a daft question? Can I not simply connect my VCR straight to my laptop and then view the tapes on the laptop screen through video software?
