I'm going to put together a computer for my brother, and he is asking if I
can add whatever it takes to allow him to copy old VHS tapes to a DVD disk.
Is there a way to do that, and if so, what hardware and software would be
needed?

Thanks,

Jack

cheapest way is to get a tv card or gfx card with video in and a dvd
burner..connect the vcr to video in and start
some capture software. If you capture at dvd quality then the file can be
huge-7 gig +-so you need a fast system and big hard drives..Also winxp or
2k to get over the 2 gig filesize limit in win9x.I am getting good results
from:-
geforce4 ti4800 w/- video in.
power director for capture and dvd authoring.
iomega dvdrw+/- burner.
bear in mind that if your vhs input is crap then your dvd will be crap too.
Oh and you need lots of patience too,it is a slow process :-)

cheapest way is a tv card with video in and a dvd burner, software like power
director will capture edit and produce
a dvd in one package..If you capture at best quality then the file is huge
,about 3gig per tape hour,so a big hard drive and winxp or win2k(win9x has
problems with files>2gig) are necessary..at least a gig of ram too..there
can also be problems with
the macrovision copy protection scheme on some tapes which require a
workaround.Find out about that and more here.

(win9x has

that would be 4 gigs

I'd like to see W9x handle a 4GB file.

NT/2000/XP use a version of FAT32 that can have 4GB files. W9x FAT32
can only be as large as 2GB.

NTFS can have much larger files of course.

I do it everyday on Win ME, don't know what your referring to exactly, even the ATI software I use as a limit of 4 gigs on the ME
driver...not that's its a fun thing to transfer between storage devices but it does just fine..

Sure pal.

I capture to DV AVI in Windows98 with Scenalyzer Live set to split the
captures every 4GB with no problem.

Check the capture card section. 2 most popular options are Canopus ADVC-100
and ATI AIW. Though, Canopus is much easier to get set up and working
properly.

yep,ur right,just transferred toy story1(3.4gig mpeg2) to a win98se machine
and it works just fine.
so whats this 2gig limit i have in my head..ram limit??
