winxp pro; VHS pass thru Sony TVR33 to MM - Everything looks good and ready
to capture until clicking capture when the screen blanks and it appears to
be copying the tape in the TVR33.

It won't work at all without a tape.

Suggestions?

MM doesn't work well with pass through, it may be better to record it to the
tape and then on to the pc, or buy an app that supports it if you have
plenty to do!!

I Haven't had any luck using the pass through feature on
my Digital Sony Handycam via Windows Movie Maker. I get
the same results you describe, It will work if you use
Sonic MyDVD software to capture the video just be sure you
don't have a tape in the camcorder when you begin capture.
Hope this helps.

Movie Maker 2 does not directly support the use of a digital video camera as
a pass-through device when capturing video. See KB Article 814835. However,
a capture utility released in April 2003 Windows Media 9 Capture allows you
to do a pass-through, saving to a DV-AVI file which you can then import into
Movie Maker.

The Problem Solving > Checklist page of my website has the links.

Windows capture, see links at www.papajohn.org or search for it at
microsoft.com will do pass through. If you do not have many to do you may
well find recording it too tape will be easier and then just capture from
the cam as normal with MM.
