After a reformat of the drive I have reinstalled Windows 2K Professional. My screen is now set to 600x400 basic horrible size. Won't let me change it in display settings. Only shows 16 colour as option. VGA Monitor is standard. My graphics card is inbuilt in the motherboard and I'm not certain what it is. I would have thought that all the Windows Update for the system would interrogate and tell me what I need. It is impossible to work with this because most websites are not even visible because of the colour display. I can't go to the manufacturer's website for the driver because I don't know who the manufacturer is. Have reformatted this same system before and not had this problem. Please could someone resolve this for me - I see the problem all over the place in newsgroups but I don't see very clear solutions except to tell me to install drivers but that doesn't help me as I don't know which drivers to install!!

You'll need to establish what video adapter your PC has and download
the appropriate drivers. Refer to the manual or website of the PC or
motherboard manufacturer.

Alternatively try a system information tools such as AIDA32
(http://www.aida32.hu/).

Windows Update only updates installed Windows components - it cannot
install drivers for hardware which has none loaded.
but I don't see very clear solutions except to tell me to install
drivers but that doesn't help me as I don't know which drivers to install!!

That's the fix... you need to find out what drivers are required.

Try a google search for Aida32 a sys info tool.
Its allways possible that yr grahics chip is shot. Try Hardware, uninstall
any graphics, reboot to see if win finds them.
Personally I dont use winupdate to install any drivers, having had probs
with the suggested drivers, allways use hardware manufacturers site/drivers

Thank you so much. Aida came to the rescue and told me
exactly what I needed and success finally today after a
week of going round in circles!! I was already on the
right website for VIA Tech but chasing my tail!! Thanks
again.

Thank you Paul - this helped enormously. Went to Aida
and found out exactly what I needed to know and managed
to finally download the right driver today! Bingo!
Headache over. Thanks again.
