I'm hoping someone can help!
I work in a building with around 6 PCs - all networked, either
wirelessly, or through a LAN - and, as I'm slightly experienced in
computers, I've been designated the PC guy.
Last night, our ADSL modem/router died - so we picked up another - a
LinkSys WAG54G, which has both LAN and wireless capability.
I set it up without any problems but, when it came to connecting the
computers, something unusual happened:
In the office downstairs, there are two PCs. Both of these are now
connected via cable to the router - and both show the live local area
connection (100mbs). However, only one has an internet connection -
the other just brings up a 'This page cannot be displayed' error. Both
PCs have exactly the same settings, and they've both been checked for
viruses and spyware; both are clean.
A third cable runs upstairs to a hub, off of which runs three other PCs
- all of which are connected via cable, and have a working internet
connection.
So - I have one PC, which is connected EXACTLY like the others, and
which shows the local area connection - but cannot access the internet.
As an experiment, I installed a wireless card in the problem PC, and
tried to connect to the new router that way. Bingo - connected first
time. However, I would much rather have the PC connected via a cable
for the faster speeds.
So far, I've changed the cable between the router and the PC; upgraded
the ethernet drivers; flash updated the motherboard BIOS; and even
backed up and reformatted the offending computer - but I still get the
same result.
It's driving me nuts! I'd be grateful for any and all suggestions.
With thanks
Tommy
