VERY WEIRD IE PROBLEM

J

Josh

Ok I am on DSL, running windows 98 through a router. I'm
currently using IE6 but only updated because I have this
problem. It was doing it with 5.5 too.

Basically everything was fine and dandy until I suddenly
started getting this "Page cannot be displayed" error. I
didn't change anything, I deleted some spyware but thats
it. All of the settings are correct and as I said I
installed IE6 hoping that would solve the problem but it
didn't.

Here is the kicker. Outlook works perfectly. MSN IM works
perfectly. AOL IM works perfectly. Kazaa works perfectly,
and so does Netscape. In fact I've been forced to use netscape.

But the REALLY weird part is that if I open AOL IM and open
the stupid AIM TODAY window, or if I open Kazaa and on on
front page press CTRL N (both use IE) I get a new IE
windows (as expected) and it works! If I try to open links
in a new window the new window doesn't work, but the window
opened through Kazaa or AIM works!

ONLY the desktop icons and opening the program directly
does not work. I am running NOD32 (virus scanner) and have
been for ages, no sign of any virii. I get a virus update
like every hour or two. I also scanned for Spyware/adware
and found some but removed it.

I am stumped!

Josh,
Go to: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Download "Hijack This!" [freeware]

Unzip, double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button.
Click: "Save Log" (generates: "hijackthis.log")

Next, go to the below location:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/forums/

Sign in, go to the "Spyware and Hijackware Removal" section.
Press "New Topic", copy and paste hijackthis.log into your new message.

Post back with the URL where you posted if you want help with your log.

You probably have more spyware to delete.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
