frustrated

Strange problem started midday today. I logged off and came back to
computer several hours later. Selected my user id icons, entered
password and over an hour later the desktop icons are still not
"filled", almost all autostarted app's are still not running. Tried
to crtl+alt+delete to get task manager up but 10 minutes later when is
showed up the cpu is at 100% w/ 55 processes running and I cannot get
into anything.

The other two user id's have not problem logging on (did hw reset to
reboot).
I'm stumped. Any suggestions?

XP Home latest service pack (as the computer I am writing from), 2
hdd, 512mb.

55 Processes at startup?!?!!

That right there is part of the problem. I generally try to configure my systems so that after startup there are no more than 25 processes right after startup.

I think what would really help is if you could post what process is showing 100% CPU utilization, or a list of all processes running. It could give someone a better insight on what is actually running on your system.

From your brief desciption it sounds like a certain autostart application for your user account is hanging up during startup.
