Very unusual Remote Desktop connection issue

I have come up against something that has me stumped.

When I try to use the remote desktop client on any PC in the network to
connect to (abc machine) which is also an XP Pro box (fully patched). I
enter the name of the machine click connect and the box blinks for a
micro-second and goes right back to the connection window with no signs of
anything. It is like I never clicked the connect button at all.

Nothing shows in task manager, there are no errors in Event Viewer,
connectivity is solid, I can ping the abc machine, tracert it and access all
files on it. What makes it very strange is that if I go to the abc machine I
can remote into any other XP box from it.

It is 100% internal with Firewalls deactived and no software in either
machines that would stop connectivity.

Thanks in advance,
Charles

Don't know if this will help but thought I'd pass it along anyway. Last year
I was setting up a Dell Vostro 410 in an office and kept running into the
same problem you've experienced. Did a little research and came up with a
promising lead that pointed towards the video adapter. Downloaded updated
drivers from Dell's site but it didn't fix the problem. Went to ATI's site
and got the latest drivers for the adapter and that fixed the problem.

Bottom line, you might want to look into updating the video drivers for the
machine in question. And as I experienced, if the one's from the computer
manufacturer don't get the job done try getting them from the video card
manufacturer.

Good luck

Nepatsfan suggested what I would.

Update the video card driver from the video card manufacturer on all
machines. Do not use the ones from Microsoft and do not use the one from
the computer manufacturer (if something like Dell, Lenovo, Gateway, etc) if
you can help it (it could be an NVidia desktop I suppose. :-))

That sounds like it is what your problem is.

I have the very same issue here with two different machine:

One is a Vista Home Premium and the other is a Vista Home Premium 64 bits.

But machine were used to be able to connect to my work XP Pro machine.

More tests performed:

From the same two machine (Vista Home Premium and Vista Home Premium 64
bits) I can connected to my workplace machine using a Java based client.

It does seems related to the Microsoft Terminal Services Client (redist)
ActiveX plugin for IE.

I am using IE7.
