Howdy all, I have a real weird one, i'm running home premium & can't get any
sound from the general windows sounds (minimise, recycle) but can get sound
from windows media player & itunes, my drivers are up to date & i have
checked all the settings & properties.

Apologies if you have tried this already... click once on the volume control
icon on the taskbar, then click on mixer. Is the Windows Sounds setting
turned all the way down?

Doug

Thanks for the response Doug, I checked the System volume & it's at the same
level as all the other volume indicators, level 38.

The Mute button at the bottom of the Windows Sounds slider does not a a very
tiny red crossed circle does it?

When you right click on the Speaker icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar
and select Sounds have you checked that the sound notifications you want are
enabled, and have you tested them from there?

Hi Cal Bear, I have looked at what you suggested & all volumes are turned on,
when I go to control panel, click on configure & run the test I can hear the
sound. Still no sound from general windows sound though. Thanks for your
suggestions.

What is your audio adapter?

I would recommend a complete removal of your current audio drivers and any
utilities and a reinstall of the latest Vista drivers.

Hi Lisbeth, I checked the sounds setting under sounds in control panel &
everything looks to be enabled, you can select or changed them & even play
them but can't hear them.

Go to Control Panel > Device Manager > expand Sound, video and game controllers.
The audio adapter will be listed there (Realtek, Sigma Tel, etc.)

Realtek ac97 audio

I downloaded & installed the vista file at the site you said Cal Bear 66 but
still no good, sounds still come from Media player, MSN & Itunes though.

Did you always have this problem or did it just start recently, I ask
because I installed a windows update from Realtek and lost audio just
yesterday so I went into device manager and rolled back to the previous
driver and now all is good. I think the problem is that I have SoundMAX
onboard but windows updated with RealTek drivers and if you have windows
automatically update this may have happened to you.

hey Michael D, I did have sound originally, couldn't tell you when I lost it
though, just realised that it wasn't working one day. Will try rolling back
the driver but the only thing is I downloaded a large driver file from
realtek, will see what happens. Thanks for the info.

I to have the same problem. Have vista home premium edition 32 bit. Realtek
HD Audio. Everything is listed as in working order the volume has been turned
up full blast yet there is no sound in Media Center, Player or even Windows
Sounds. Speakers are plugged in correctly and everything tested and
presumably in working order. Anyone else have a suggestion ? Thanks

There is no red X on the Speaker icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar?

In Control Panel (Classic view) > Device Manager > (expand Sound, video and game
controllers), there are no red circles or yellow exclamation points?

All speaker options show that everything is turned on & working, also there
are no red circles or yellow exclamation points in sound, video & game
controllers. Even though I get no sound from any windows based sounds, when I
play the test that is in speaker setup it plays no probs at all.
