I regularly visit a government web site (for many years) and have not had a
problem with any of their links. However, about a month ago one link will
not work. I goes to a site that is searchable for all personnel in the
Agency.

I have tried everything I know of and cannot get into the page that I need.
All the other links work fine and there are hundreds and hundreds of them. I
contacted the web administrator for the site and they said the link was
working. I have also tried my wife's mac and the link works for her computer
running OS X and using Safari.

The link is http://directory.psc.gov/employee.htm

Help!!

i suggest you notify the webmaster of that site so he can correct his
link. the problem is not on your end, it is on their end.

Worked fine here, US Health and Human services right?

Looking at that page you should see something even if the JavaScript is
broken so what happens at your end?

Do you get any error message or a part page or does it say something like
"Cannot be found" ?

A reverse DNS lookup shows 3 servers so it is possible that there is a
problem for your machine in locating the page

192.73.61.192
192.73.61.161
192.73.61.163

You could try replacing the domain name with these numbers and see if any
work.

http://192.73.61.163/employee.htm

works for me :)

That might help if you have a DNS problem.

Hi,
Your version of Windows? Version of Internet Explorer?

What happens when you try to access that URL? Any error message?

Hi Richard :-)

I don't have any problem accessing the website here, it appears to be
normal.

You don't mention the version of Windows you hare using, or what error
messages you may get. Have you tried clearing your Temporary Internet
files?

Clearing the TIF Cache -
Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm
Delete Off-Line files as well
or.
How to Delete the Contents of the Temporary Internet Files Folder
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;260897
Delete view off-line files not the pages File, Save as.

also...

Try adding the site to your Trusted Zone

You can update your scripting engine. The latest scripting engine can
be found at:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/downloads/list/webdev.asp

For 2000 and XP go to
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...43-7e4b-4622-86eb-95a22b832caa&DisplayLang=en
The install includes a new jscript.dl

Hope this helps.

Error message is : The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be
experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser
settings.

I am running IE 6.0 on a Compaq AMD 64 chip with XP Pro Service Pack 2.

This is very frustrating. It is as if there is a special block in my system
for that link, and i checked and cannot find such a block.

Hi Richard :-)

Have you checked your HOST file?

Check for a hosts file (just "hosts" not hosts.sam or lmhosts)
Windows XP. C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
You may have to enable the viewing of hidden files.

Rename your HOSTS file to OLDHOSTS and see if the problem persists.

also...

Check in the Restricted files in the Internet Options>Security and see if
the site is listed there. If so, remove it.

If it is not there, try adding the site to your Trusted Zone there and see
if that will help.

If you have any 3rd party toolbars, such as Google or Yahoo, disable them.
If you have Yahoo Companion, uninstall it, as it known to cause various
problems.
*****
Also, go to Tools>Internet Options>Privacy
Click Sites and enter that site, then click Always Allow
****
Start Internet Explorer.
On the Tools menu, click Internet Options.
On the Advanced tab, scroll down to the Security section, and then
select the Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 options.
Click OK.
*****
Any firewall program you use - Zone Alarm, for instance/example, can block
out sites and their cookies that some sites require.
Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?] Reset "Ad Blocking"
and "Cookie Control" to "medium" "Mobile Code Control" = Off
*****
Check any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referrer"
or contains entries that are blocking access to the desired site.

Hope this helps.

well, i'm getting the same result as you...US Dept of Health and Human
Services employee search database. if the webmaster says that's right
then i guess that's right.

Hi,
Looking back through this thread, have you tried...

Open a CMD window from Start> Run> CMD, enter
ipconfig /flushdns
Then restart.

Especially if using a router, have you done a complete shutdown- router,
modem, computer(s) everything?

Can you access the site if you startup in Safe Mode with Networking? That
would indicate that another program is blocking the site.

Don
[MS MVP- IE]

Well that almost eliminates DNS problems, as someone (Don I think) suggested
maybe try looking off your PC for the problem. There are a number of things
that disrupt page display, scripting and cookies for example, but I'm
thinking you PC simply cannot get to the page or the page is not getting
back.

You can eliminate the operating system networking part by trying FireFox if
you like. Again this is not 100 guarantee but it is a good indication. IE
may be broken due to spyware or attempted hijack by spyware, if you have not
checked have a look at the links in the signature below and consider trying
some of the measures outlined. It's clear you have tried most things so that
leaves broken firewall (even if it looks okay for other things) a corrupted
file as a result of a hijack or else a firewall in the router or some
translation problem. Sorry there seems to be no instant sure but most of the
usual problems are cured by the suggestions so far :)
