Very slow URL identification

I am running XP home on a 3Ghz machine. I have a good DSL connection.
Software is current to SP2 and using IE 6, also current.

When a URL is entered in IE there is a wait of several seconds during which
time the status line shows the message "searching for .......". Another
computer, using the same ethernet cable and modem gets almost instantaneous
response. Once the URL has been "found" the rest of the page acquisition
process is almost instantaneous. I have compared both computer's internet
settings and nothing is apparent.

Could someone explain what IE is waiting for when it is "searching" for the
URL.
Where does it find the URL?
Is there some parameter that I can manipulate to speed the search process
up?
The slowdown occurred a few days ago after a power failure that was
protected by a UPS.

Much appreciate any help you could give......................Jim

First eliminate any scumware.
CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of these programs ,
download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

See
Dealing with Unwanted Malware, Parasites, Toolbars and Search Engines
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

Frank I updated and ran both ADAWARE and SPYBOT. I downloaded and ran
LSPFIX with no problems found. I read "Dealing with Unwanted Malware".
Downloaded updated and ran CWSHREDDER with no problems found. The log just
contained my base system information. I've double checked my security
settings and downloaded and installed the latest HOSTS file. Net result so
far is I still have the problem. If Malware isn't the problem is there
anywhere else I can look?

I'm wondering if 'automatically detect settings' is enabled in your proxy
options (IE tools, internet options, connection, LAN settings or dialup and
VPN network settings). That would cause such a slowdown.

To all that wonder why "page cannot be displayed" :
You do not state what firewall you are using
If you are using a firewall that has a privacy setting
that may be the reason why you have the result "page cannot be
displayed" or IE is slow to find the URL or display it.
The same problem has been bugging me since I upgraded my eTrust
firewall.
I have read every post on this issue and cleaned all my spy and adware
with everything that was reccomended.
Still there was no joy till I tweaked my firewall settings.
Believe me I have little hair left!!!
I hope this helps.........
