One of our secretaries' XP machines is running dramatically slow. I checked
here and got the most likely problems fixed, as indicated in the subject,
but it still runs painfully slow. It only has 128 mb memory, which some
have mentioned as too little. Could this be the problem?

Also, on another issue, she keeps getting a message from Norton AV that the
message she is sending is being rejected by the server, but she is not
sending any message. I assume that it is one of those viruses that use your
system to send out emails, but we updated and then ran NAV and it came up
clean. Oddly, the messages about outgoing emails did stop for a while after
that. Any other way we can check what is causing this problem?

You need at least 256 MG of RAM to run XP and 512 MG would be perfect unless
you fool with a lot of video in which case you might need more.. As for the
E-mails, do these things as a mimimum:
A. Open Outlook Express/Tools/Options/Security tab/checkmark the box
preceding the sentence "Warn me when other applicatrions try to send mail as
me".
B. You may have addware, spyware, phone-home stuff hidden on the computer
which is sending the E-mails. To remove such, get Ad-aware
(www.lavasoft.com) and/or Spybot, Search & Destroy
(http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file_description/0,fid,22262,00.asp) and
install and run them to eliminate the trash.

Thanks! I did not know about that warning feature, I will do that right
away. I will also get her some more memory, which I suspect is the problem.
I did run Sybot already and she had about 30 or so in her system, so that
will help as well.

Thanks again!

Not true, although more is better always better. XP runs fine
on 128 unless your running alot in the background.

More is not always better. At some point, depending on what apps
you run, you have enough RAM so that the page file is never (or
almost never) used. Adding more RAM past that point does nothing
for you.

I agree, but that doesn't mean it's not better to have more. It's there *if*
you need it, which is better than not having it if you need it.
I view it as reserve power. You may not need it, but it's there if you do.

Each to his own. I view it as a waste of money. I keep my reserve
power in the store. If I need it, I'll buy it then.
