I have been using windows Me for a while now with no problems, its been running very fast but decided would like to upgrade to windows Xp, was bought the Pro version. Have installed the software, took an age for it to install, seemed to hang then keep going a bit at a time, we are talking hours. After installation the system is now running very slowly indeed, removed all the hardware, checked all conections, nothing, take about 20 minutes just to boot up. If anyone has any ideas would be grateful.

Thanks

I suggest you go through the process of elimination. Start by clicking
start---run--type in 'msconfig' without quotes and remove items from the
startup. Then, try cripling virus detect programs etc. etc.

20 minutes is pretty extreme for boot-up allright. My
2.16GHz AMD with 512Mb DDR SDRAM takes about 1 min 20
secs. I've turned off some unneeded programs.

It would help to know a bit more about your computer. How
fast? How much RAM? What type of RAM? How much free
space on the hard drive?

Was your anti-virus program auto-protect (and other
running programs) turned off while you installed? If so,
did you disconnect your Internet connection?

Did you format C: and do a clean install or did you set up
a dual boot with the existing ME?

Have you updated and run your anti-virus program since the
install?

Have you updated and run programs that check for spyware
etc. Use Google to locate 'Ad-Aware' and 'Spybot', both
donationware; update and use both weekly. SpywareBlaster
is also good to have.

Check here as well:

With that setup your computer should load faster. My XP
came pre-installed so I don't know how long it takes to
load when you do the install yourself. At this point I
would suggest re-posting (so you aren't back here on page
4). Be sure to cover the following points as well when
you re-post.
