Very Slow Formatting and Burning

I have a no-name machine, Intel Core2Duo with 2GB of memory running Windows
XPSP3. Motherboard is Gigabyte GA965P version 1... I believe it is version 1
as the version number is blocked but when speaking to the company, they said
based upon the location of the writing that is the version it is.

The problems are communications internally ..... Burning a cd can take
almost an hour ..... installing a program from cd or dvd takes forever ....
and formatting a 250gb sata internal drive is 10% done after over 3 hours.

The main hard drive is a Seagate 160gb sata ... the 250gb is drive "d" and
while I have had it sitting in the machine connected, it was previously not
formatted..... probably because I ran into this once before and cancelled the
format.

Any thoughts on what settings I might look to change ?

Thanks,
Sarah

Your problem with burning and formatting might be linked. Rt.Click on
Taskbar>select Task Manager. Look in Processess for any values that are much
higher than 00. Only System Idle should be very high. You can go to the
manufacturer of the 250GB Hard Drive and look under Your Model>Support. I
would try disconnecting your cd/dvd drive.
That can cause a slowdown if flaky. Make sure that your motherboard is
updated.

Problems of this kind often arise because the drive is not using DMA. As well
as being slow this poses a heavy load on the processor whilst the drive is
in-use.

Check the advanced settings for the IDE/SATA channels in Device Manager. If
they say "DMA if available" they are probably OK. If they are on PIO mode
they are not OK.

Also, check and install / update the chipset drivers. Chipset drivers
can provide the Ultra DMA IDE drivers which will help in using most
DVD / CD drives.

from taskmanager make sure usages of CPU if you CPU usages is constantly 99 then you system is block by many programs, many programs are blocked in Memory format you PC and make sure to get Utility to safe the memory from blocked programs.
