diet,

What version? Beta2 was slightly, but not significantly, slower than
Windows XP SP2 on my system. RC1 and above seem to be quite a bit better.

I don't know if my problem is the same, but I have a 3.0ghz P4 HT, 800mhz
FSB, 512mb ram, ATI 9600pro 128mb ram video, 7200rpm 60gb HD. I'm getting
VERY VERY SLOW response time. I'm talking, just logging in to the lap top I
can enter my password and wait +5 seconds from the time I'm done till the
time it enters the first astrix into the password box. It's horrible.
Unusable. It is a laptop. I've tried installing the newest video drivers.
If I log in to safe mode, it works perfect. Any ideas? (My laptop is a
Sager 5680)

P.S. As a reference, I started writing this after I hit enter when typing my
password at the log in screen. I still don't have a fully loaded desktop.
Half the icons are still loading, and I'm not THAT fast of a typist.

Same thing, i had to go back to xp, ebcause it took 5 minutes to logo because
the way it faded in and out, it did it bit by bit, and was extremly slow

I'm looking at system resources, and it doesn't look like anything is out of
whack. I just don't get it. I know my laptop isn't a speed machine, but it
should at least run it with a decent response rate. I've used VNC
connections over dialup that are preferable to this crap.

We had a Microsoft Exchange tech on site a couple of weeks back. His $2
worth: if you don't have 2Gb RAM, forget it. And if you look on Technet, the
MS recommendation for any flavour of Vista except basic is 1Gb RAM and 128Mb
Video RAM, and those recommendations are usually rock bottom minimums.

I've used XP with 64/128mb of ram, and it runs like shit. Compared to what I
am experiencing with Vista, 64mb ram XP would be FLYING. I know that if I
want to use normal apps, I'll need more than 512mb, but hell...with zero apps
loaded, I should have response times that don't take 9 seconds for the start
menu to appear after I hit the start button. And this is with NO apps
running. I'll see if I can borrow 2 ram sticks from some one and see what
upping the ram does. In the performance monitor, it says my ram usage is
only as 52-56%, so I'm still a little baffled.
