hi,
I have around 12 computers in my office(most are running on windows 2000
and very few on XP and one on MAC).They are all networked to one an other
through ethernet. There is one main computer running on Windows 2000 which
has all the files and I use a simple file sharing protocol for others to use
the files on this computer. But from a month or more the file sharing has
become extremely slow.
It takes around 2 min to open a simple word/excel file. I am not able to
solve the problem even after trying out many things. For the 2 mins when it is
opening a file it shows NOT RESPONDING and then opens it.
From the main computer when I open the file to an other remote computer it
opens immediately. It would be really very helpful if someone could help me
solve this problem

Shut each computer off one at a time while checking
file access time. Broadcast storms come from such
issues as bad network card to hub port or slow hub
itself failing for some reason. When network speeds
back up you will know the bad device, sometimes
just rebooting an offender corrects symptoms.

Hi Dhiraj,

Try these:

1. defrag the hard disks on the file server(main computer)
2. Ensure that you are using 100Mbps capable cards, cables and hubs in the
network.
3. If you are using a hub, you can consider upgrading to a switch to
decrease the number of collisions and improve network speed.
4. If you need more performance, you can implement RAID on the file server.
Even a simple RAID 0/1 (mirroring) will improve the file read speeds. If is
preferable to use hardware RAID.
5. You can choose to upgrade the file server to a faster hard disk, more
RAM, faster processor....

Last but not least, while trying to open files from the file server, you can
first copy the file to the client system and then view it locally.
