Very S L O W machine

I have a machine that is acting very quirky. When trying to open the start
menu it takes up to a full minute for it to open in a state where you can
even select something! Windows is obviously hanging with something, yet
having task manager open it's not showing high CPU Usage.

In another situation while trying to open a PDF document, there's up to 60%
CPU usage, and again it takes up to a full minute before the document opens.
This is the same for any program Word, Excel etc...

No errors in event viewer that even gives me a hint of what's going on.

I don't believe it's the users profile as I'm logged in as Administrator.
No viruses

This is a P 4 machine with 768 mb of RAM running XP SP2. I just upgraded
the RAM about a month ago, but this machine was doing the same thing as
before.

Am currently doing the usual defrag, disk cleanup. This hasn't been
helping. There's an apparent overall operational problem with this machine,
I just don't know what troubleshooting I can do to get to the root of the
problem.

Another thing I just noticed about this machine is besides the default user
there are 17 different user profiles on it. Could this somehow be causeing
all the overall system hangups?

Is there a "right" way to get rid of all the unneeded profiles other than
simply deleting them? I really need assistance on this because re-imaging
this particular machine isn't an option. I've got a developer who remotes in
to do work, he's got things installed on the machine that I don't have the
media for.

You are not in a position to follow any advice given as the computer is not
under your control, and will have to take up the performance issue with the
person who has free access to it..

What programme is being used to open PDF documents? Adobe Acrobat
Reader?

Hope this helps.

Will a Web Ex with Microsoft suffice? Also the question about the fact there
are so many profiles on the machine (17 not including default user), does
that have any bearing on this?

Yes

XP does not have 17 user profiles by default. Somebody has set them all up
for reasons that you do not seem to be aware. The same person is probably
making changes to the system now and again.

Unless you have full control over your system, there is little that anybody
can do for you here. As I said, you must speak the the person who shares
your computer.

I know XP doesn't have 17 user profiles by default. What I said in the
earlier post is that there are 17 user profiles BESIDES (not including) the
default user. Other user profiles are from people that no longer work here.

I wouldn't even be posting this if I didn't really need ideas of other ideas
of what might be causing this. The easy answer is to just re-image the
machine, but with this one there's a remote developer who uses it. He's got
tools installed on it that I don't have the media for.

I'm sort of insulted by the misunderstanding.

OK.. you didn't say that it was a work machine. That more explains the
multiple users.

Even so, as long as there is one person remotely accessing the machine for
work purposes, the only way you are going to be able to do much is to talk
to whoever that person about what is on there, and whether it would be easy
to set up again on a refreshed image. What you do NOT want to do is to start
a process that may cause more problems than you have now and witch could end
up wiping anything out or prevent the person doing whatever, and as nobody
here will be able to determine what the remote user does, my original answer
stands.

There was no insult intended.

Adobe Acrobat Reader has a large footprint. Many users have switched to
Foxit but whether this would suit your situation depends on what
functions are being used.
