I have Norton System Works 2004 and when I run Speed disk it takes for ever
to defrag my hard drive. Does Symantec have a newsgroup that I can post my
question? I don't want to spend $29.00 for help.

Thanks.

What's your definition of forever, and how large is your drive, how
fragmented is it, and how much free disk space do you have? All of these
are important factors and questions others will want to know when trying to
help you.

Hi Joseph,

When you defrag a large drive (e.g. 40 or 60 MB) that has not been defragged
before, it can take "forever" no matter what defrag program you use. Have
you tried letting it run overnight and, assuming it eventually defrags,
thereafter defragging it every day (or two at the most)? Then it would only
take a few minutes each time. I also suggest doing a defrag after any major
change, such as installing or removing a large program like Photoshop or an
Office component.

Joseph,

Things to try.

- turn off your virus checkers
- turn off any other background processes
- don't use your computer for anything while it's doing a defrag
- do a defrag more often - each time it's quicker
- invest in a 10mb hard drive. These things defrag in no time :)

If I might offer one more suggestion: Take your computer off the web (and
any home/office network). Close your email.

I know that these things supposed to slow down de-frags anymore, but it is
still safer.

Thanks.

Symantec still has online support, but it has become very well hidden.
You can ask a question via email. They do have you search the knowledge
base first, but if you persevere you eventually get to a page where
there is a form for an incident report. Try www.symantec.com/support to
get started. The knowledgebase may actually provide a solution for your
problem. The issue you describe is quite common. The first remedy is to
turn off anything that runs in the background, as other respondents
suggested. I have used Norton since it came out for DOS, and migrated to
all the windows versions, and while it can be clunky at times, I
wouldn't want to be without it. It works.
