very confused

dell computer booted up and said file corrupt. said to recover from xp disk. installed disk and it said to overite existing files we did and now we have 2-editions of win xp. and we can't do anything with the computer. monitor has bad graghics
and cannot even reinstall monitor, all programs and files are still on computer but nothing will work
 
You have probably badly corrupted the registry too. I would try and back up
everything you can and do a complete reinstall after formatting the drive.
There are a couple of good second party programs that I always keep around
for these things. PowerQuest has Drive Image and Partition Magic which will
allow you to copy things over to another drive or to an image and to manage
partitions. They both will allow you to do these things outside the
operating system from a floppy which can be quite handy too. These are two
of my "must have" apps and are not very hard to grasp either.
