Im seeing lots of people saying that WD doesnt auto update virus definitions.
Im scared now that new viruses will slip in my computer. Ive only had WD
about a week or so. does anyone know if microsoft has an answer or fix for
this or where we can get updates, ty :0)

People often come to newsgroups such as these only when they have a problem.
Hence, we see a lot of messages about specific problems, and you might think
that such a problem was universal. The same was true when Microsoft
Antispyware was the supported product here. There were over 20 million
installs, and there were lots of people complaining abut update issues, and
we were still keeping our heads above water, in terms of responding.

Yes--there are update problems which affect some people. Of the 50 or so
machines I administer, perhaps 3 of them have seen an update issue, and for
two of those it was once, and a good while back.

I don't have a current estimate of the size of the installed base for
Windows Defender--but my own experience is that only a small minority of
machines see this issue. Microsoft is working on it, and I expect to see
some visible progress soon.

If your definitions are dated last Tuesday, they are current. Definitions
historically have been issues slightly more frequently than once a
week--often someone posts here or in announcements when new ones are
available.

Really--I wouldn't sweat this one. I would recommend worrying more about
your antivirus definitions.

Janet, hi;

We can all appreciate your concern, but you don't say if your having this
problem or not. It would be helpful if you posted your version information
from Help > About Windows Defender. Like this, which are my current version
levels and should be very current as I've never had an update problem with
WD:

Windows Defender Version: 1.1.1347.0

Engine Version: 1.1.1440.0

Definition Version: 1.14.1459.12

Normally updates occur around Thursday, so you might have to wait a few
more days to see if anything changes in your versions... particularly the
Definition Versions which are generally updated weekly. The other version
numbers update/change less frequently. If your definitions don't change by
then, I'm sure there will be many suggestions offered to you, perhaps
starting with this one:

Hi Janet,

I hope you use also a Anti Virus scanner, because WD is a Spyware
Scanner/blocker and no Virus Scanner!
