Hi,

My computer froze up a few hours earlier while I was
listening to some music and chatting on MSN Messenger.
That's all I was doing. So I hit hte PWR button and
rebooted, since it's all I could do, but half way through
the xp boot loader I get a brief BSOD. so brief that I
can't read it and it reboots again. I tried loading in
safe mode and last good configuration, no go. I tried
going to the system recovery console, but when I go to
C:\ and type dir it tells me "An error has occurred
during the directory enumeration".

This is the first time this happens, and the computer had
been running smoothly since I built it in august. I have
11 gigs of very important files, and I can't lose it!

My thoughts are a file system error on my hard disk. But
I do get an XP loader, meaning the hard drive still
exists. I have no automated system recovery disks :-( My
computer remains shut down as we speak :-(

Help, please...

Hey Eric,

So you can boot recovery console and login ok.

What sort of file system were you using, was if FAT32 or NTFS ?

Are you starting the recovery console from the release CD or did you install
on your hard disk ?

Booting from the CD is safer if you have it handy.

You should of course back up critical data, becaue if the file system is
corrupt it may not be possible to fix it.

However, you can try.

From the recovery console, try running chkdsk

Run it first without any switches and see if it reports any errors.
