Router wired to 6 port hub. Toshiba laptop wired to hub running XP Pro
SP2. Desktop wired into hub running XP Pro SP3.
The Toshiba has internet access, the desktop does not! How bizarre is
that and how do I go about diagnosing WHY the desktop does not have
internet access? (The desktop can ping the router OK).

There are lots of reasons for that.

1 - Do you have Norton or McAfee products installed?
No.

2 - Have you checked the internet connection properties and are they set up
for Dynamic IP?
yes.

3 - How many firewalls do you have installed and what are they?

Only Windows Firewall and I've disabled that.
NIC working properly and connected to the network.

This is a machine that is not used very frequently and last time it was
used, (some weeks ago) the internet connection was working properly.
Powered it up this morning and Poof! No internet.....

Are you using IE or Firefox? If you are using IE, download and install
firefox to see if it works. If it does then you have a problem with IE.

If you want to forgo downloading Firefox you will need to go to
Start->Control Panel select Internet Options go to the Advanced Tab then
click on the button Reset to reset your browser to the default settings. You
browser may have been attacked.

Is email accessible?

Here are a few things to try:

Open Internet Options, Connections tab, click "Lan Settings" button,
deselect all.

Flush DNS

Click Start, Run, type CMD and click the [OK] button. Type each of the
following:

IPConfig /FlushDNS [Press Enter key]
ipconfig /release [Press Enter key]
ipconfig /renew [Press Enter key]
ipconfig /registerdns [Press Enter key]

NETSH

Click Start, Run, type CMD and click the [OK] button. Type the following:

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter key

Restart the system

You can also try this software download from a working machine:

LSP-Fix

Can you ping the other comp that is connected to the same hub (the one
that does have internet)?

No change after doing all that......

This reports no problems. maybe I'm looking at a re-install......good
thing it's got no data on so I can just wipe it....

This gets even more bizarre. I also have an old laptop that uses a
PCMCIA Wireless card to access my wireless network which is also routed
through this hub. THAT wouldn't connect to the internet either (but I
wasn't too fussed about that, because it has funny moments anyway).
We then had cause to disconnect the router from the 'phone line as we
had a local electrical storm. On re-connecting the router to the phone
line, both machines suddenly connected to the internet.
Anyone got any thoughts on why that should have happened and what might
have caused that?
Only these two machines were affected - two other machines on the same
network had no internet problems at all!

Hi
Routers are actually mini computer with CPU Memory and the firmware acting
as OS.
Something during the storm partially trashed the setting in the Router
memory. When you unplugged, and plugged again it rebooted and load correctly
the OS/Firmware.

Ok, can the desktop ping the internet say www.yahoo.com?

Did you ever have Norton or McAfee products installed?
What are you using for AV/Malware Protection?
What are you using for Firewall protection.
Any other helpful info...

Can you go to Start->Run type cmd then at the command prompt type:

ipconfig /all > ip.txt

then post what is in the txt file?

I know you've since resolved this problem but let me ask: If you connected
the desktop directly to the modem, did it have internet access?

We unplugged the router before the storm got near.....
