vertical status area

My question is about the status area in the lower right corner of my screen.
I have WinXP with a horizontally aligned taskbar at the bottom. In addition,
my open programs also display horizontally across the bottom of the screen.
I've always had a quicklaunch toolbar as well. The status area icons (5 of
them) have always displayed horizontally.

All of a sudden, the status area icons are displaying in 2 vertical columns,
taking up twice as much vertical space as before. However--if I close the
quicklaunch toolbar and drag downward the horizontal line, above the "start"
button, THAN the status area returns to its normal horizontal display. But
this means I cannot display the quicklaunch toolbar any more. Can someone
help me return my screen to normal??

Once you drag-down the horizontal line, you should be able to right click on
some clear area of the taskbar, go into Toolbars, and select Quick Launch.

Thanks for your reply, and I have tried that. When I do as you suggest,
quicklaunch reappears, but the status area also returns to its vertical
alignment. ??

Have you tried left click on top of taskbar and push it down and then
release. Make sure Taskbar is not locked.

BINGO!! Thank you so much! I had to drag the one of the "fill handles" up and
then everything straightened itself out. I've been puzzling about this all
evening. Thanks again!
