Vertical Split Window

Is it possible to have a window split vertically rather than horizontally?
Most screens are wide enough to comfortably put 2 pages side by side, but
when the split is horizontal there isn't as much space to view the two panes.
 
You can open a second window, which can then be scrolled independently of
the first window (in Word 2007, click New Window on the View tab).

I have tried three times to post a reply in this thread, and for some reason
none of the replies have appeared. This doesn't seem to affect any other
threads, as my replies to those have appeared instantly. One of those
mysteries, I guess.

I was trying to point out the Compare Side by Side option in Word 2003
(together with Window | New Window to open a copy of the document); I noted
that scrolling is synchronous by default but can be disabled using the
button on the floating Compare Side by Side toolbar. In addition, you can of
course view two *consecutive* pages side by side in any version of Word (by
setting the Zoom to Two Pages).
