Vertical Navigation Buttons Problem

I've made web pages with the navigation buttons at the bottom of the page;
piece of cake. This time I want to run them vertically along the left side
but I have a picture I want in the middle of the page. How do I get the
buttons to remain in place when I insert the picture? Every time I try it
separates the buttons at the point I insert the picture. I know why it's
happening but I don't know how to avoid it. Please help. Pete
