Vertical lines

I have a Word 97 document that was created by someone who is no longer with the company. I have opened the document in Word 2003 but in several places there are vertical lines that run outside the left margin. The lines are only in a few areas, but spread throughout the document. They do not appear to be formatted as borders, nor are they drawn. I can't get rid of them. Could this be caused by an incompatibility with Word 97 and 2003? Also, several lines are in red text. Again, it doesn't appear to be formatting, since I can't change the font color to anything else
Any suggestions?

These are change bars and formatting applied by the Track Changes feature.
If TRK is black on the status bar, double-click it to turn Track Changes
off, then (very important) display the reviewing toolbar, click on the arrow
beside the Accept Change button (check mark), and choose Accept All Changes
in Document.
