Vertical lines on flat CRT monitor

Hi,

I have a new Philips Brilliance 109P, which is a 19" flat CRT. It's been
running just over 24 hours, and in that time has developed a series of
vertical streaks made up of fine lines.

I've never come across this before, but I'm guessing what I'm seeing is
a shadow of the aperture grille. Is that correct? If so, is there
anything I can do about this, or does it have to go back?

TIA

I thought I'd reply in case anyone else comes across the same problem.
Having found nothing about this on a long google, I decided to see if a
good whack would fix it. It did (4 whacks were in fact required).

It appears that the aperture grille wires had moved a little, and
whacking the monitor moved them back.

Ah...yes.......the good old mechanical adjustment when all else fails.

Hmmm..........even though the.......uh.....ah.......adjustment
worked.....this time, I would consider exchanging it. I say this because I
wouldn't expect what you saw out of a monitor as new as yours.

Good luck.

The truth is out there. You just have to look in the right places and ask
the right questions.

No, I wouldn't expect it either, but I'm willing to put it down to
thermal settling if it doesn't do it again.

It's brand new with a year's warranty, so if it does it again it'll go
right back.

Does it have a trinitron or diamondtron CRT-tube? If it does, those 2 lines
are there to keep the grill in place. All *tron tubes have them (they use
aperture grill).

Checked the specs, your monitor has aperture grill, and those 2 lines belong
there. The price to pay for better quality picture.

Yes.

Please see my post - *vertical* lines. I know about the damper wires.
That isn't what I was referring to.

So are these lines rapidly pulsating, almost like interlaced lines
from a TV signal? I've got a 19" flatscreen (P900?) Trinitron that
does that intermittently, appears to be a fault with the monitor as it
will be fine for a time, then start doing that, and if the monitor is
powered off then back on immediately the lines disappear, at least for
a while. From about 6' away the lines aren't even visable, but up
close or with light colored background they are. The damper wires
continue to provide a very clear outline, it doesn't appear to be
damper wire related.

I too should probably have it replaced, but it's always been pretty
low on my list of priorities as it's not my primary-use monitor. At
one point I was thinking it had something to do with the cable
routing, near a surge strip with transformers plugged into it, but
since power cycling the monitor temporarily resolves it that doesn't
appear to be the case.

Yes.

Oh, didn't notice it. The question about those horizontal lines is so common
that I somehow read it as 'horizontal' :)

Oops. I too misread the post and assumed horizontal lines, which is
what I saw on my Trinitron, not vertical.

I know the horizontal line question comes up often.

The lines are gone now (as per my reply to my original post), but they
were a little like the damper wire lines, but dozens of them, and
vertical. The aperture grille wires in fact.
