Hi Norman-
The extension itself is not conclusive as all Excel versions use XLS. Excel
97 and later all use a file format known as BIFF8. Earlier versions used
other BIFF formats. Generally no version can read a BIFF format later than
itself. But all versions can "save back" to an earlier BIFF version using
the Save As dialogs file type drop down.

| Hi smriti!
|
| Excel 97, 2000, 2002 and 2003 all use an xls extension.
|
| Files saved in later versions will open in earlier versions although
| there may be some losses of functionality if the later version file
| uses some new feature.
