I purchased and did a clean install of Windows XP Pro on
my Compaq Presario computer. However all information
indicates that I have a version of Windows besides XP. I
purchsed XP Pro at a Staples store. I also keep getting a
Cd Rom event code 7 when I try to use my CD R/RW drive.
It used to work even with this version

By "all information indicates that I have a version of Windows
besides XP" <- what exactly are you going by?

Start -> Run -> type in:

winver

Click OK. In that window you should see your windows version.
"Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2.######-### : Service Pack 1)"
is HOPEFULLY what most people with XP see by now.

Or Start -> Run -> type in:

cmd

Click OK. At the top of the Command Prompt that appears should be a line
that states what version of Windows you are using. You should see something
like: "Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]"

Or Start -> Run -> type in:

control sysdm.cpl

Click OK. You should be in the General Tab area of the System Properties
window. Under the section there titled "System:" you should see the version
of Windows you are running. Like "Microsoft Windows XP".

Have you opened Internet Explorer and gone to
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
lately? There you can scan your system for updates and patches and
download/install them.

Do you have Antivirus Software installed and updated?

Do you have a firewall (either the built in one or one you
downloaded/purchased) running and configured?

And your problem with your CD drive - is that with any and all CDs or
particular CDs. Sounds like a Bad Block error to me, but i could be off on
that one - and a bad block error on CDs woiuld either mean bad CD (not
drive) bad drive (not CDs) or bad cabling/etc to the CD drive itself from
the computer.
