Manual update keeps updating from 5785 to 5787. Why does this continue to
happen with these updates? I have cleared the temporary files, etc. etc.
but it is just a bug in the program again. Do they not learn from past
experience?

I'd recommend that everyone in this thread just sit back for a bit--a few
hours or a day or so, and not worry about the issue.

We've seen this issue early in the definition distribution cycle with some
frequency. I believe that this is a server issue, not something in the
client end product which you have control over.

It'll take care of itself as the servers get synched over time.

John,
I've been having the same issue myself with the new 5787 defs. Hopefully the
servers will get synched as Bill said.

BTW, Bill, thank you very much for ALL your very valuable input to this list
as I for one really appreciate it, as I'm sure the others do as well.

Bill,

Have been a lurker for quite some time and appreciate all your efforts and
input as well as many others. This is the same problem that existed earlier
and now seems to be back. Will the old work around resolve the problem...
and if so, can you point me to the post with the procedure for updating the
definitions "the hard way"? Many thanks again to all.

Fixed. You can now get 5789.

Tried to update to definitions 5789 with no luck... still ended-up in a loop
with no update... until I did what was suggested below by Engel. Walla!
Took less than a minute and updated fine. Checking for new updates showed I
was now current (up to date) and "diagnosis" showed running 5789 and:
Definitions Increment Version: 142/142
Definitions ThreatAuditThreatData: 1345263
Definitions ThreatAuditScanData: 2963894
Definitions DeterminationData: 745158

The problem existing before may have changed a bit in the program and may
require following the above solution. Many thanks to all.

We're applying various fixes to this problem, but every one of them has this
in common:

They take a little time, and then we try the update again--and this time, it
works!

It's unclear to me whether it is the particular incantation, or clearing of
whatever that works, or simply the timing.

I lean towards passage of time as the true effective measure in most cases.
There are a few cases where folks are pointing to installs that have never
updated that definitely need specific help--but for most people with the
"cycling updates" issue, I believe simple passage of time, and
synchronization of things at the server end is the true fix.
