I recently subscribed to Verizon DSL and just noticed that Verizon offers an
AV suite for about $5/month. Their web site doesn't say much about the
program- what program it really is. Any comments?

Like all ISP's, what they offer is lame and can easily be duplicated
on any system for no cost. Firewalls are gimicks these days and not
needed given you already have a NAT-router.

Question:

Does Verizon do any of the basic things, like port-25 blocking, or
block netbios ports between subscribers?

I am a Verizon FiOS Network Technician. My documentation informs me we
only block two ports -- 25 and 80. I guess we do not like people
setting up their own servers.

By blocking port 25, you are not really sending a message that you
don't want people to set up a server as much as you don't want to be
known as an ISP that pollutes the internet because you allow the many
thousands of your infected customers to send spam from their infected
systems.

But by not blocking the netbios ports between customers, you are
allowing cross-contamination and infection within your customer base.
Does Verizon even block netbios port access from outside it's network?

I'm shocked! You actually admit to working for the top spammer's host, in
the world?

See http://www.spamhaus.org/sbl/listings.lasso?isp=verizon.com

You actually have the nerve to admit you work for Rusty Cambell, who
seems to have complete control of verizons management, given he's caused
your so called isp (better known as spammer heaven), to be listed for
over four YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Can you, or can you not, get his account(s) terminated.

Since I know you can't terminate your companies pet spammers, please pass this
message on to anyone, who might be able to.

I'm amazed, anyone would be willing to admit, that they work for such a slimepit!

That's correct for fBA areas. What about fGTE areas ?

BTW: TCP port 445 may also be blocked in fBA areas.

Truthfully, I don't know. My domain is from the customer's premises to
the Central Office. What happens from there to the gateway router is
beyond my sight.

As far as former GTE or Bell Atlantic is concerned, I support field
techs from VA to DE so you could say Bell Atlantic is the scope of my
knowledge. The documentation I quoted regarding port blocking is even
in dispute among my fellow network technicians so don't hold me to it.
