I set my RDP to an alternate port number. But I can't seem to get
port forwarding to work through that port. Has anybody successfully
set this up? The interface on this router is a bit convoluted, and
support is nonexistent.

Thanks,
Jim

See if this helps. Ignore references to UDP Ports. Make sure you reboot your
PC if you make a change to the Remote Desktop listening port in the
registry. I would test over your local LAN, ie. from another local PC, using
the private LAN IP of the Remote Desktop host first to make sure you have
the alternate port setup correctly including on any software firewall
running on that PC.

Sorry, I should have been more clear. I have been successfully using
this setup for over a year while using another ISP, a cable company.
At that time I was using a Netgear router and it was a breeze. But
with this new setup, no luck. Yes, I can connect over the LAN using
the reassigned port.

Thank you,
-Jim

So what type of ISP are you using now? If its DSL then the DSL modem might
also be a router. If so you need to either setup port forwarding through the
DSL modem/router or configure it is a bridge/pass-through mode. Remember
that generally its not a valid test to call the Remote Desktop host PC from
another PC on the local LAN using the public address (IP or FQDN). You need
to test the public address from a truly remote PC.

You can test port forwarding through your router(s) by going to the
http://www.canyouseeme.org site using IE on the PC you want to remotely
access/control with Remote Desktop.

Thank you, I'll try that. I am using Verizon FIOS via their
Actiontech MI424wr router (see message header).
