I have 4 DCs and all of them no local tape drive.
I have Veritas backup remote agent. Would it work for us?
I want also to have a centralize backup of all our DC. In
my knowledge I cannot backup a DC remote and even restore
if does anybody try the Remote agent? Please advise if
this will work for us
Short answer - yes, VERITAS backup products can backup remote DC's using
their agents.
We recommend VERITAS backup products exclusively to our clients that
need more than what the built in backup application (also written by
VERITAS by the way) offers. We've found it to be stable, effective, and
reliable, plus easier to use than other options.
From a configuration perspective, it sounds like you need one machine
that will have at least one tape drive. This will be the "media server"
and you will install VERITAS BackupExec (assuming that is what you will
be using - not VERITAS NetBackup) on this machine. When running the
installation you will be able to "push" the remote agent to other
servers at the same time.
As for licensing, it sounds like you will need one server license and
four remote agent licenses. Note that if you have an Exchange server you
will probably want an Exchange agent as well. Keep in mind that each
Exchange agent comes with a Remote agent at no charge. Also, the
Exchange agent is installed on the Media server, not necessarily on the
same server as Exchange is installed on.
Hope that helps!
