One of the troubleshooting pages contained this statement.
"Check all drivers for all hardware devices to ensure that they are the
current best for Windows XP."
But it did not say HOW to do this. For instance, my oldest device is my HP
Printer 970Cse. Would someone please advise me just how do I go about
verifying the device driver for my printer? Thanks in advance for any
detailed information. Using XP Pro w/SP2. Jim

I visit the manufacturer's site to see if they have updated drivers for the
operating system I'm using. A Windows XP installation disk might come with
drivers for the device but those drivers may be years old and may have been
updated since XP was released.

To locate drivers you can:

visit the hardware manufacture's site and do a search for drivers for your
hardware type, model and operating system. Check the date of the drivers and
download the most current update for your hardware. see this link

visit one of the sites that specialize in locating drivers i.e. Driver Guide
http://www.driverguide.com/ then do a search for your make, model, and
operating system. There are several such sites and some of these sites
require that you sign up and some actually charge a fee for the service.

if you are unaware of your hardware manufacturer or model etc you can
install a small program that will identify the hardware on your system. Fee
tools are found here http://www.teligy.com/Device_Driver_Locator.htm or
Belarc Advisor found here http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

You dont need any of the 3rd party software the 1st post listed,xp already
has that type(s) in the OS...For driver verifying, simply go to
run,type:SigVerif
Run the utility..For hardware info, open device mgr, expand the tree,R.click on
a listing,select:properties Or,go to run,type:Msinfo32

Harry - If my system is running fine, and always has, is there any reason to
bother with updating drivers. Just curious.

Jim

You should ignore Andrew E. Occasionally his advice is correct but most
of the time it is best ignored. Harry Ohrn is an MVP and a more reliable
source of advice! The key is MS MVP [Shell\User] after his signature.

As a general rule "If it works don't fix it!"

If you are not having problems don't run the risk of introducing one.
