Thanks fr responding - but I'm afraid your response leaves me no wiser !

When you say that XP doesn't use "Verify", does that mean that verify is
always ON, or always OFF ? i.e. does XP automatically verify disk writes?
Or Not ? It seems that the default is OFF, and it's NOT possible to set ON
as the default....

Or am I wrong ? I'm confused....

Verify is not used by XP - it exists for compatibility with MS-DOS files -
right out of the XP Help & Support. My interpretation of this, is Verify
does nothing in XP, if an MS-DOS script/program uses it, it responds as if
Verify actually runs, being set to on/off as needed - after all, it looks to
be just an environment variable.

As far as performing a verify of disk writes, XP does that on its own, so
does the hard drive and the I/O controller - and fair more often and
efficient than the old DOS verify utility. Remember XP has no "true"
MS-DOS, it has a "cmd" shell that emulates MS-DOS best it can, which means
XP is the real OS.

Please don't start a new thread each time you post. When you're
following up on a previous point, you should use "followup" not
"post" (or whatever similar commands your newsreader has).

Start a new thread when you're actually starting a new topic.
