I keep getting an email about a possible patch for
internet explorer. Every time i scan the email attachment
it shows a virus but says it is from microsoft. Is anyone
else getting this? is it safe to download? let me know.

There was a virus that was going around about 6 weeks ago that was addressed
from (e-mail address removed) and had a .pif attachment.

If your anti-virus software is reporting a virus then heed the warning.
Trash it?

IE updates can be made automatically by selecting the 'Automatically check
for Internet Explorer updates' option on the Advanced tab of the Internet
Options control panel.

Hi Al,

Microsoft *NEVER* distributes software via email. The mail which you
received is not from Microsoft, though the from address says so.

Please go through: Microsoft Policies on Software Distribution:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/security/policy/swdist.asp

NOTE: If you receive an e-mail that claims to contain software from
Microsoft, do not run the attachment. The safest course of action is to
delete the mail altogether. If you would like to take additional action,
report the e-mail to the sender's Internet Service Provider. Most ISPs
provide an "abuse" userid for this purpose.

This can not be repeated often enough. Microsoft *WILL NOT* send attachments to
you except by prior arrangement.

Any E-mail arriving from an address like '(e-mail address removed)' containing an
attachment should look like a huge billboard reading 'I am a virus' to every
computer user. See the following page for more information on Microsoft's policy
regarding software distribution.
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/policy/swdist.asp

One protection method is to create a message rule in Outlook Express as follows;
Go to Tools>Message Rules>Mail>New
In the top box) Check "Where the From Line Contains People" and "Where the
Message has an Attachment"
In the center box) Check "Mark as Read" and "Delete it" and "Stop Processing
More Rules"
In the bottom box) Click on "Contains People" (in blue) and add "microsoft.com"
(no quotes).
Do not use "Delete from server" since OE has no way of knowing if there is an
attachment until it arrives in your inbox.
If you use any other rules which sort mail into different folders or otherwise
move the mail from the Inbox, then it is imperative that the above rule be moved
to the top of the rules list.
