TI searched the knowledge base for info on this file with the results telling
me Security update 908531 installed the program which validates shell
extensions before they are instantiated by the Windows shell or by Windows
Explorer. Some problems were programs stopped responding or functions within
programs stopped responding. Possible causes are HP Share-to-web or NVIDIA
shell extensions. I do not have the Share-to-web program but do have NVIDIA
stuff (HP Pavilion dv9317 AMD Turin 64 X2, 958 MB RAM, Vista Home Premium
32-bit).

What concerns me is that everytime I close Windows Mail, my ZoneAlarm
Security Suite warns me that Windows Mail is trying to launch
C:\Windows\System32\verclsid.exe, or use another program to gain access to
privileged resources. Application WinMail.exe. Why would Windows Mail be
trying to launch verclsid.exe when I am closing the program? Is there a
security risk?

I don't have a direct answer for your question, but this is a perfect
example of why I don't use third party security software like Zone
Alarm. The third party guys are always a few steps behind when
it comes to compensating for Microsoft changes.

Thank you for replying but your reply was not helpful this time :(
Regardless, I am glad that ZoneAlarm at least lets me know what my computer
programs are doing. It did let me know that the verclsid.exe is trying to
execute upon closing WinMail. I just wanted to know why it is doing that and
if it is some sort of security risk. And maybe exactly what the program is.
From the name it looks like it is some sort of id? As I don't know naming
protocols I guessed version class id but am probably way off base.

When you Google on "verclsid.exe" there are a whole slew of recent
articles about it. My point was that most users are not as interested
as you are in the nuts and bolts of security. For the average user the
Windows Firewall is a better choice because it doesn't throw up an
alarm over known Microsoft processes.

Thanks for the search idea. I found out from dslreports.com that quite a lot
of people have had problems because of the update containing this program.
And I also found out more about what the program is and does. My guess about
the naming of the file was pretty good lol. Learned more from that site about
it than from the knowledgebase at MS.
