Ver temp files

My computer is filling up with temp files that start with "VER". They are
being generated at about 4 a minute. The size indicates that they are 0, but
apparently they are taking up some kind of space as the more that are
generated, the slower my computer gets. I have checked both Dell Support &
Trend Micro Support. I have tried shutting down - one at a time - everything
that appears in my start up file. I have analyzed my Task Manager Processes &
Services. I have run antivirus with the newest definitions. I have run a
registry clean up. I've gone back to a restore point before I noticed the
problem. This happens whether I am connected to the internet or not. Safe
Mode does not make a difference. I have searched the internet for similar
problems & found one person on About.com having the identical problem, but
there was no solution.

I am running Vista Home Premium on a Dell computer. I use brand name
equipment & software & stay away from shareware & the like.

Does anyone have any ideas?

How 'bout a malware detection program?

I guess I should have specified - when I said anti virus, that also included
malware, trojans, worms, viruses, etc. The resident antivirus - Trend Micro -
along with 2 online programs - came up with nothing.

Anne,

All the files start with "VER" & end with ".TMP". each file that is created
has different numbers & letters between such as - ver23e6.tmp, verc652.tmp,
ver442e.tmp, verdb61.tmp, etc.

Mark,

I use Outlook for e-mail. Closing it makes no difference. I do not subscribe
to any news groups on that computer. Creating a new profile makes no
difference.

My guess would be you are seeing some problem with your mail or newsgroup
app. I would close those to see if it stops. Reinstalling and/or creating a
new mail/news profile may fix it.

There is really not a lot of info. That's why I'm having such a problem
tracking down the cause. The path is C:\users\name\appdata\local\temp.
Properties just shows a 0 byte size, the path I mentioned before, that it can
be opened with Windows Shell Common.DLL, that it is a temp file, & the date &
time created & modified.

Anne,

I had thought it may be Vista causing it, but I am also running the
identical version of Vista, MS Office, Trend Micro, etc on another computer &
this isn't happening. I completely shut down all programs that were different
between the 2 computers & it made no difference. It has just started within
the last month or so. I say this because there is about 4000 - 5000 files
being created every day. When I first noticed it, there were 64000 of these
files. That would be approximately 15 - 16 days worth. I started checking out
my system because it seemed to be getting slower than usual. I do monthly
maintenance techniques and had never noticed it until now.

I have been working with computers of one kind or another for the last 30
years, but this has really got me bumfuzzled. I'll check out the site you
sent & see what I can figure out.

Have you taken a good hard look at all the services that are running,
in the hopes of finding something that doesn't look kosher?
