Does anyone know of a freeware version of a vector illustration program
(like Illustrator or FreeHand)?

How about a Flash-like program?

Thanks
Dave

Inkscape! http://www.inkscape.org/

It's the best thing out there for doing Illustrator-like work. It
is in full development (now at release 0.41, more recent daily
builds available), but it's far stable enough to use it for
producing graphics. It defaults on SVG format and exports to
postscript and bitmap formats, which can be further converted with
the appropriate tools. Development is very active, and it has a
great community to rely on for help or feature requests.

Note that I'm not a professional graphic artist, so my
requirements may be lower than yours. But still, try it and you'll
see.

There's even documentation on "Inkscape for Illustrator Users",
that recently appeared on the Inkscape Wiki:

Well, Inkscape does SVG, it doesn't support Flash (for now?).
OpenOffice Draw does have Flash export, though, so you might want
to have a look at that if you really really need Flash.

Wald
