From the beginning:
Installed new Sound Card. No drivers. Dnloaded drivers & installed. Didn't work.
Got correct drivers & installed. Card still didn't work. I DELETED (still haven't learned!) files from orig dnload install.
Now...can't use CD drives, and can't install programs: get message:
"Virtual Device Driver format in the registry is invalid."
What next?

Virtual Device Driver Error Message in 16-Bit MS-DOS Subsystem
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=254914

The article is pretty straight-forward. You'll need to use regedt32.exe
since regedit.exe cannot create Reg_Multi_Sz strings. You can backup your
reg and create the ERD by going to; Programs|Accessories|System
Tools|Backup, then choose ERD, then if you check the box for "Also
backup....", then the reg will also be backed up to
%windir%\repair\RegBack
leaving the
%windir%\repair\
directory files intact as original installation.

If you need to recreate the VirtualDeviceDrivers key; highlight the key (in
the left-hand pane), then Edit|Delete Then (in the left-hand pane) position
the cursor on the "Control" key, (so you'll be creating directly under
"Control") then Edit|Add Key, then for the "Key Name:"
VirtualDeviceDrivers
You can leave the "Class:" blank Then proceed with steps four through seven.

Make sure your doing this logged on as local administrator.

Thanks again Dave...I had to do the OS Restore fix thingy.
Most of everything is back to normal EXCEPT for this error msg:
In a dialog box entitled "16 bit Windows SubSystem" I get this:

" t. An installable Virtual Device Driver failed Dll initialization "

You'll probably need to repeat the steps in 254914

Yes you'll be deleting and recreating the "VirtualDeviceDrivers" subkey and
the recreating the "VDD" REG_MULTI_SZ string value within the
"VirtualDeviceDrivers" subkey

| OK Dave. Re.: "... it may be necessary to also delete and recreate the
whole VirtualDeviceDrivers registry key" (from the MS support article) will
I just be deleting (following the instructions, of course) and then
re-chosing the value name and data type, leaving the string editor blank?
(I'm a newbie if you haven't guessed)

Dave, you're a genius.
I tried all the steps for a second time, and this time, it
worked. I have my cd drives back (I can now load programs
from CD). Now, I'm figuring out the new sound
card...Creative SoundBlaster - OEM (not for newbies!).
THANKS again for all the help. :-)
