I have a new Sony Vaio that came with Windows Movie Maker
pre-installed. I have been attempting to capture video
from my VCR (which I have hooked up to the video and
audio outlets on the front of the computer) but Movie
Maker will not recognize the device. When I click on
capture video, the Vaio only finds my stupid webcam, but
doesn't have show the VCR or any type of video card. Why
is this?

You need to hook up to video and audio inputs (not
ouputs) which your notebook won't have. You will need
something like an Adaptec DVDoh! or Belkin DVD creator to
get video into your computer.

This sounds like what I have been attempting with my new SonyVaio
MediaCenter 44g. I have searching the newsgroups and reading the links, too.
I've played with all the preinstalled movie programs plus one with the
webcam. Movie Maker or the others do not recognize the VCR hookup but the
preinstalled program Click to DVD does. You may have this on your machine,
too.
I use the RCA plug out from the VCR to the front plugs on the Vaio. Click to
DVD allows for recorded TV and analog input and I set it to the "composite
2" connection (front). My old family VHS tapes are loaded into the program.
It allows for clip trimming, chaptering and menu page titles. It doesn't
have transitions or extras. The file extension (.ctd) is set to this program
only. I want to move the created video into another program to better
editing. Does anyone know how to that? It can only be sent to the DVD.

Yes, this is the exact problem that I am having too with
my vaio. Sony hasn't provided any insights yet. Let me
know if you find anything out and I'll do the same.

Also- when I do use Click to DVD to import a video, and
then use Movie Maker to try and read that video file, it
is only sound (the screen is all black).

Just wanted to let you know you're not alone. I've been having the exact same problem. I can get analog video into my new RZ44G using Click to DVD, but I can't find a way to edit it using any other program. MM2 won't recognize the composite video input only my webcam as BJ has described. I'm still searching for a solution. I've tried contacting Sony to see if thier Giga-Pocket software will solve the problem, but they saymy current configuration, running Media Center, doesn't allow me to install Giga-Pocket. If anyone has any advicxe on how to get and install Giga-Pocket with Media Edition...do tell.

Ok, so in order to get Video in from my VCR I've add to do the following...

1. Setup MCE to record from the composite video 2 - not as easy at is sounds but possible. I had to call tech support and then figure it out by myslef when they couldn't help. Basically you have to use the setup wizard to pretend you're adding a sat reciever even if you don't have one and pretend that it is coming in on the composite video 2 input
2. Record from the VCR as if I were recording a live TV signal (manual record) and save the file in the native MCE file format MS-DVR
3. Use the DVGate software that come with my Sony to read in the MS-DVR format and then safe it as MPEG2 (see below)
4. Use MM2 to read in the MPEG file for editing

Below are the instructions for DVGate that came from Sony...

The follow this procedure to convert DVR-MS video format to a different format in the Microsoft(r) Windows(r) XP Media Center Edition operating system
