VB6 - Do I Have It? Do I Need it?

Running XP Home SP3

One of my flight simulator add-on programs crashed repeatedly and the
software developer suggested I need to reinstall VB6. I checked add/remove
programs and can't find any reference to VB6. I've had this machine for
several years and haven't had any VB problems that I know of. I read
somewhere that VB6 has been replaced with something else. Please tell me
whether I need VB6 or something else on my computer, and where I can look to
see if I already have it. Thanks.

Search on "visual basic runtime"

I searched on "Visual Basic Runtime" and the first package that came up was
"Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package". I checked and I have that
currently installed. Do I still need to install VB6?

The Visual Basic runtime are core system DLLs, they ship with Windows XP
and are part of every installation, there is no Add/Remove entries for
these. They sometimes get updated, the latest release is Visual Basic
6.0 SP6 (VBRun60sp6.exe , released March 29, 2004).

Follow the devoloper's advice, it hurts nothing reinstalling these, it's
a small download (1MB) and installation is usually a breeze.

Uh huh. You can't be bothered to look at other hits in the results list, or
even notice my 2nd 1-line paragraph with the URL?
Do I still need to install VB6?

You said so (because you want to want to play that game).

Please stop spamming the newsgroups with your personal choice for an
anti-virus program. No one is going to believe some appeneded *text*
promising "I'm clean, you can trust me, for sure."

Thanks. I downloaded the file but I'm not sure where to place it. The readme
says to put the files in C:\Windows\System, but I also have a
C:\Windows\System32 folder. Which one should it go in?

Place it in any temporary location that is easy for you to find, you can
even put it on your desktop if you want. The file you downloaded
(VB6.0-KB290887-X86.exe) will extract another single file
(vbrun60sp6.exe) and place it in the selected location. To actually
install the VBruntime files you then have to run the extracted
vbrun60sp6.exe file, it will do the rest of the installation. After you
are done you can delete the downloaded file and the extracted file in
the temporary location.

"VB Problems," if they occur, will occur with a program that uses VB,
not with the whole machine.

I read
somewhere that VB6 has been replaced with something else.

In the sense that there are now lots more problems written using .net
than VB6, yes, it's been replaced with .net. In the sense that you can
install something other than VB for a program that needs VB6, no, it
hasn't been replaced.

Please tell me
whether I need VB6 or something else on my computer, and where I can look to

Nobody *needs* VB6 on their computer, in the sense in which you ask
the question. You need VB6 only if you want to run a program that
needs to use VB6.

There used to be a lot of programs that needed some particular version
of VB; today they are much rarer than they used to be.

Everybody *has* VB6 on their computer, from Windows 2000 up to and
including Windows 7 and Server 2008 and on both 32-bit and 64-bit
systems (on 64-bit for WOW support). They are considered as core system
dlls and VB6 runtime support is only limited by the OS support lifecycle.

Thanks, John. I didn't realize that.

However, my point "You need VB6 only if you want to run a program that
needs to use VB6" still stands.

Thank you for your kind help. I've followed your instructions and I assume
all is well now.
