VAVDOSNT Vs. KAV in AV-CLS

Questions for Art & David:

I have both KAVDOSNT and AV-CLS installed on a Win98 PC.

There are a number of files included with KAVDOSNT that aren't in the KAV
folder in AV-CLS.

For example:
Adblock.txt
Aphish.dat
Black.lst
Blst-060.xml
Engine.cfg
Engine.dt
Troj00*.avc
Virus00*.avc
And many others...

I'm guessing that the additional files are part of the features added for
use with NT/2k/XP. Is that correct.

No. No special files are required to run on those OS. You are
incorrect in saying those files are included with KAVDOSNT. They
are downloaded by the updater. Once you actually install/update
David's KAVDOS util, the same files will then be there as well.

There isn't much point in having both David's and my util for
KAVDOS32. Which one you use would be a matter of personal
preference since they both use KAVDOS32.EXE as the scanner.
I've arranged the KAVDOSNT.BAT to update and scan predetermined
target folders and their subdirectories. I think David's scans entire
drives by default. But if you take the time to learn how to
use KAVDOS32 without any helper utils, you would gain complete
control over scan options and targets. That's what I suggest you
do. You can see what the scan options are by typing the command
line:
KAVDOS32 /?

haven't appeared. Could it be that they were used with earlier KAV
configurations?

The latest file dates for Trojan***.avc and Virus***.avc are 2005 and
2006.

When I used to use KAV direct from Kasperski (I actually purchased it) the
folder would get huge with updates then periodically one cumulative update
would clean out all of the older files. Does this still occur?

You are correct. Many of those files are not incorporated in the Kaspersky module of my
Multi AV Scanning Tool.

Sounds like the updater isn't working. Maybe David will respond.

Updating replaces older files with new ones, and sometimes adds new
files that didn't exist before.

BTW, with my utils, I forgot to mention that Win 9X/ME users should
use the included KAVDOS.EXE program instead of KAVDOSNT.BAT

You are correct. Many of those files are not incorporated in the Kaspersky module of my

sounds like to me.

I think I see now what at least part of your question might be. My
updater downloads cumulatives, weeklys and dailys in ZIP form (if any
of them are newer than the ZIPs in the folder). These ZIPs contain
some files which may not be needed or used by the DOS version of
Kaspersky's scanner. For example, black.lst wouldn't be used by the
DOS scanner. It's probably only used by KAV 6 (and AVS).

David's updater doesn't operate in the same way, so there will likely
be differences along these lines. The main update files for KAVDOS32
are all the *.avc and avp.* which should and must be the same no
matter which updater is used.

I didn't want to start a disagreement between you and David, you've both
done a great service to the community.

I was having some strange problems with what has been a mostly trouble
free Win98 system. The original install date was 03-11-2000! It's lived
through several HDD crashes and backup tape or clone restores.

I ran a full maintenance and all of my anti malware programs.

a-squared anti-trojan reported finding the Downloader.Win32.Agent.avq
trojan in C:\Windows\Downloaded Program files\Sporder.dll.

That file was acting odd. Downloaded Program files is a hidden folder but
I have all files set to visible and I couldn't see it in any search or
dropdown box. It was only visible in File Manager and DOS.

I manually moved it to another folder and ran it through the Virustotal
scans. Nothing came up. I've since deleted that Sporder.dll file because
there's a later version in the NOD32 folder.

After all my maintenance including cleaning out the Index.dat flies in
Windows the systems seems to be working OK again.

I had Mwave, KAVDOSNT and AV-CLS installed.

I did a file comparison on them. That's when I found the different files
in KAVDOSNT including the older Tro00*.avc files. I was concerned about
these because of the reported trojan which was probably a FP.

You suggested that I use KAVDOS.EXE instead of KAVDOSNT.BAT to update
Win98. Why is that?

For only updating it doesn't make any difference. But for scanning, it
does because the predetermined target folder selections I set in
KAVDOSNT.BAT are not there on Win 9X/ME. For example, one of the
targets is c:\winnt instead of c:\windows

The KAVDOS.EXE program is more general purpose. You can update using
it as well, and you have complete freedom of scan option and scan
target selections.
