olivia

I have been having Java problems for some months now.
The following are only the most common occurrences.
The latest:
class java.lang.NullPointerException
was just the top line that appeared when I tried to do
the HP System checkup through Windows Help and Support.

Also, many java-enabled sites do not load for me, with
the message that I must upgrade my browser in spite of
the fact that I am using IE6.0
The same even happens in Hotmail before I reach my Inbox.

I can't install the latest Java app. (j2re-1_4_1_07-
windows-i5861) - it downloads, but then Windows does not
recognize it as a valid Win32 application. The file
itself shows as 0kb. The same happens whether I open or
save the exe.

Also, I can't attach files to Hotmail, and when I
download any attachments, Windows adds a [1] to the
filename without my consent, which usually means the file
can't be found or opened.

I've followed all the tips for options in Internet
Options > Advanced. To no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Olivia,

I haven't any *real* answer for you at this juncture. Sorry. I can say that
the Java site *may* be having an issue though. If you get the error message
(not a valid Win32 application) which you've gotten, often that is due to an
incomplete (corrupted) download. Re-download the file again. Make sure to
empty your TIF's /Cache by the approved methods first using IE
Options>delete files. You may be getting the download from your cache.

Windows Offline Download and Installation Instructions for the JavaT 2
Rutime (sic) Environment, Standard Edition (JRE) file
j2re-1_4_2_05-windows-i586-p.exe is messed up right now. I had to un-install
Java for a particular reason, and now I cannot re-install it as an error
appears. This has been ongoing for two days now. It states something to the
effect of "error: <something or other could not install, due to something or
other>(hehe pretty useless and unscientific of me.) It differed from your
error message though.

Anyway, see here for general info:

A simpler solution I could not have found, after months of
inconvenience...but it's a bit strange. I turned off my Norton Antivirus
programs and suddenly everything worked just fine. A couple of days later I
got a little nervous, turned Norton back on and decided that I'd disable it
only for the previously problematic pages. However, I forgot to do that at
some point and found the pages worked just fine anyway! No more annoying
Java errors...I wonder what happened to change things?
I'm just sharing an experience, not necessarily looking for an answer,
though if anyone has one do share.
