I've been reading posts and have been to the windows help site. Here are my
issues: I cannot view websites that have their urls forwarded. I have done
the hijack thing...and from reading other posts i also deleted host files
and cleared history, cache, etc. I did all those things and it all worked
until I closed explorer and then opened it again a few hours later...now I'm
back where I started.

Would the best thing be to re-install ie? i dont want to lose all my
bookmarks, my email messages or my address book ( i use outlook
express)...Also, ( I will be posting in the OE group) I can receive emails
from aol addresses but not send emails to an aol address...

Very strange. This all seemed to start when windows update updated me with
the service pack...so should I wait for another service pack for the service
pack?

Not sure what else to try.

well. u can always backup your favorits folder before
reinstalling ie, so there is no harm.
you can find it at <driveletter>:\Documents and
Settings\<username>\Favorites and your cookies are at
<driveletter>:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Cookies
but you can also press shift-refresh to do this, you
don't have to delete everything first.
your email is saved at, <driveletter>:\Documents and
Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\{registry key (only one there so,
couldn't be hard to find)}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
but, i wouldn't trust that, by just copiing it over your
new files, it doesn't always work.
if you installed microsoft outlook from the microsoft
office thingie, you better synchronise your email, by
downloading it from outlook express with the import
function. then export to a pst file, then, when you
reinstall, just do it the other way around, first run
outlook, import that pst file, then run outlook express,
and import outlook settings and mail.
same with the addressses, import in outlook, save it as a
pab (personal address book), and import em back into
outlook express.
i think that's about it.
what you can do too is, download the latest updates from
microsoft, be sure your browser is closed (look in
taskmanager for a file called iexplore.exe and just end
session) rightclick your internet explorer icon, clear
your cache, offline files, temporary internet files, and
cookies, and history, and disable automaticly detect
settings from the connection/lan tab in internet options.
and now try again, and otherwise, send a angry letter to
our good man bill, like we all do, and pray for an
answer, cause that is what microsoft is all about :p
(my apologies to anyone who works for them :p)
anyone got a job for me? preferably networking?
i would really appreciate it. :D

i'm sorry, but i think i gave you wrong information after
reading the bottom 3 sentences. you said after you
installed sp1 for xp ?
could it be possible u use a pirate version of windows
xp, a copied version?
because, that could be the problem.
after you install a pirate version of xp, you have to
activate windows BEFORE installing sp1. it's quite easy.

0. Run a system resore to create a new checkpoint in
case you need it.

1. Run regedit and go to:
HKey_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current
Version\WPAEvents, on the right double click
on "oobetimer" and change at least one digit of this
value to deactivate windows.

2. Choose run from start menu and type in this
command: %systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a to get
the activation screen and go to the second option which
is activate by phone.

3. In the new screen choose the option to change
product key, and type in the new product key.

3a. If it brings you back to the prior screen after
entering the new key click remind me later and then
reboot.

4. Close that window, reboot your system and enter the
command in step 2 for the second time to verify your
activation, you should see "windows is already activated".

4.1 Now install SP1

5. If you have done this wrong or without a valid key
you will not be able to boot. hit F8 and select last
known good configuration

Run the following commands from start/run.
Run each line individually.
After each run, you should see a short message stating
the command was successful.

The first command is the one most likely to work.

regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll (only applicable to Windows ME,
Windows 2000 and XP)
regsvr32 shdoc401.dll (only applicable to Windows 95,
Windows 98)

regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll

Reboot Computer and test.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll
