I received an "error message" regarding security, to install "Performance
Optomizer". It claimed to be from microsoft but the program was by
"SellMoSoftInc", which seemed odd to me. I did not install it fearing that is
was not from microsoft.
Please advise if this program was legitimate, and also, if it was, is it
necessary?

Thank You.

It isn't; your hesitation is justified.

It definitely isn't necessary, and the "error message" is an advertisement.
Ignore it. If the ads persist, you may have a malware infestation to some
degree, and further action may be needed. If they don't persist, there may
not be a problem.

Patrick, thank you very much for your response and information. I appreciate
it very much.

Good.

It's not, but that's not the reason you shouldn't install it. Many
excellent programs are not from Microsoft.

necessary?

Two points:

1. Not only is it not necessary, all programs of this type are snake
oil. They do nothing useful that can't be done without them and are
far more likely to cause a problem than to solve one. Avoid all
programs like this like the plague.

2. This particular piece of snake oil apparently relies on a
scurrilous method to try to sell itself to you. It infects you with
malware, and then has this malware pop up an "error message"
advertising itself.

So you are already infected. I recommend going to MVP Malke's malware
removal site at
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware and
following the instructions there.

based on the link below
from a antivirus company,
that software has already
been investigated.

http://www.ca.com/securityadvisor/pest/pest.aspx?id=453118837

further the homepage promoting
that pestware doesn't seem to be
up anymore and likely taken down.

however, you might have downloaded
a residual software made by them that is
prompting you to download the additional
malware from them.

if you don't have any antivirals
installed then you might want
to run the "tools" offered on this
page:

Right. Remember this: Microsoft does NOT contact
anyone in that manner, nor by e-mail unless you have
specifically requested it. NEVER bother with any of
that crap; that's all it is is crap.
Glad you hear you did the right thing.
