You can use the default System Administrator account to recover.

If you are using XP Pro, at the loin screen, press CTRL+ALT+DEL twicw to see
the System Administrator account. This account does not have a password
associated with it unless you specifically selected one during the
installation of XP. Log in to this account and open Control Panel/User
Accounts and select the account with the forgotten password. Click Change
the Password and change the password. Exit, log off the Administrator
account and log onto the other account using the new password.

If you are using XP Home, you can follow the same instructions except that
you will first need to start in Safe Mode. To do this, restart the computer
and start press the F8 key when the system starts until you see the menu.
Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode and press ENTER. You will be able to
log in to the System Administrator account there.
