i am having a problem downloading windows Defender Beta 2 because it is
saying that it can not validate my version of windows.

What steps does it give you to take further? Can you describe your version
of Windows and how you got it?

i have Windows XP Pro that i got through school using the microsoft accademic
alliance where i could get it for $10.00, i called microsoft and it is a
valid copy.

Originally it was saying that it cannot validate my version of
windows. Please contact your local product support team for further assistance
with this issue.

Now it is saying :Why did it not validate?
You have encountered an unknown error. Please contact your local product
support team for further assistance with this issue.

That all sounds like it should be working. I've got a troubleshooting doc
around here somewhere, let me see if I can get you some leads.

This is not brand new information, and WGA changes, but here's the thing I
see to try:
---
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...53-3759-40cf-80d5-cde4bbe07999&displaylang=en

According to what I am reading, you aren't getting blocked because of a
pirated volume license key or anything like that--you'd get different
messages.

If you aren't already, use Internet Explorer. The active x controls wont work
in Opera and other browsers.

actually--if you try in an alternative browser, you may get a different
method which might work differently for you, fwiw. I haven't heard or
tested with Windows Defender, but Microsoft Antispyware was definitely
downloadable via Firefox, with WGA validation.

--

aol explorer, realplayer, mozilla, opera, and Netscape browser all did not
work, gave me an error code of 0x80080299 with the unknown error message.

I was afraid that might happen. I don't have any good contacts about WGA
issues.--if I get time later tonight I'll see if there I can find any
information.

It'd be nice to be able to refer you to Microsoft Product Support Services,
but you'd need to have a virus or spyware in place for that to be a valid
call......If you could point to spyware in place, you could call
1-866-pcsafety in the U S or Canada. They'd use Microsoft Antispyware or
Windows Defender as the tool of choice, and of necessity would have to get
you through the wga check to do that.

Security patches don't require wga. WD requires wga, and isn't supported.
Catch 22?

(Of course, I did just hear of an instance where they recommended Ewido
right off the bat--so you never know!)

i just tried it through the genuin microsoft software site, and it gave me ....

Validation Failure: Activation Limit Exceeded[0x80080209]

Why did my machine fail validation?

The number of times Windows can be activated with the product key found on
your computer has been exceeded. This may be the result of installing and
operating a single copy of Windows on more than one computer.

I have only put it on one machine. and i have only done some upgrades to it,
which I did brand new installs on and that's it. I put in a new mother board,
processor, memory and video card in december, didnt validate saturday when i
went to download windows defender so i wouldnt have to download it sunday.
Sunday i replaced the harddrive with a larger one, and installed windows.

That might be enough stuff changed to require a re-activation.

Can you see whether activation is "alive"--i.e. whether it allows you to
attempt to activate?

I'm trying to actually to that on my machine, but can't get anything
associated with oobe to do anything useful. Probably a good thing!

What I'd aim for is being able to do phone activation--You should be able to
activate via phone, laying out that sequence of events. And, maybe, that'll
clear up the WGA issues.

I'll activate by phone tomorrow when i re-install windows, because I have
already activated it on-line, but i just cant Validate.

FWIW--it looks like they just rev'ed the WGA tool:

You might take a look at this and see whether any of the links get you any

If you go to MicrosoftUpdate, it should prompt to download the new WGA

Have you been to Windows Update today? They've just rev'ed the WGA code.

I do think that the ultimate fix for you will be activating by phone--when
you are in a position to do that.
