Last night I installed v3 callcenter, a free (lite) fax program, on my
machine (Pentium 133 with 80 megs of RAM running Windows 95). After the
installation and reboot I immediately had problems. Got an error message:
"the following system files have been replaced with an older version by a
program you ran. Windows may not run correctly until you exit and restart
Windows so that the files can automatically be repaired ---
d:\windows\system\unidrv.dll".
I rebooted, went to settings -taskbar and removed Call Center. I also
ran Norton Windoctor to remove any reference to call center in the
registry. There is no problem now but I'm wondering if I need to download
a newer copy of unidrv.dll and install it. My version is 4.00.950, 193K,
dated 7/11/1995. thanks, helium
p.s. what fax programs do you suggest using on slow, old machine? H

If you needed the program, why uninstall it? I would have simply gone
to one of the many .dll archives and downloaded, then installed the
newer version of unidrv.dll.

Hi John.

How do you know you can trust those archives? Couldn't someone put a
backdoor in those DLLs? If you know of a trustworthy one, which one would
you use?

Rach

PS: as a total aside I need a free voicemail program too, but free
callcenter reboots my computer when it tries to connect to my modem.

Call center causes too many problems so I won't reinstall it even if I can find
a more recent version of the dll. Rach made an excellent point: which dll archive
is reputable and has dll's that are clean of backdoors, garbage, etc.?
thanks, helium

Extract it from your Win95 installation CD-ROM. It's there somewhere....
long time since I've used it so I can't tell you where it is exactly.

IMHO V3CallCenter is crap. I'm afraid fax software is one category of
freeware which has no decent offerings, as is the stuff they package with
modems. Only good fax software I've found is commercial software.

Good question. I usually run such downloads through an AV and Trojan
progs. I like this site:

http://www.dll-file.com/

It's recommended by Lockergnome.

By the way, here's a good resource:

I agree. This is probably another category that needs to be added to
the "Wishlist."
